Creating a logo for your business can be daunting. There really are so many variables to consider, and how do you know you are making the right choices. You want your logo to stand out from the bombardment of logos already out there, and you want it to effectively represent your business. A good graphic designer can help you get the best possible logo for you, but these tips below, will ensure you are heading down the right path.

A beautiful logo is nothing if it doesn’t communicate your business. So the first thing to do is research and make sure you have a clear idea about what message you want to convey. When my husband and I first started his surveying business, we came up with a left of center business name and logo to go with it. No one could tell what the logo was, (a tripod shaped like a leaf) and the name (Fertile Soil Land Surveyors) gave us plenty of calls from people needing their soil tested, but not for Surveying! We ended up changing names and logo!
Have a look at what others in your field have used as their logo, choose a few that work and a few that don’t. This will help you get a feel for a design. You don’t want to copy, but you can be inspired!
If you hire a designer, make sure they give you a design brief to fill out. Help them out by giving as much specific information as you can.
Think timeless. If you choose a typeface or image that is trending, it may look good for a while, but could potentially become dated. Do you know the legendary Coke logo was created in 1886, and its still going strong! Now that is timeless.
You don’t NEED to have an image/icon. The text can be the logo if you like.
Your logo needs to be popped on a variety of materials: cards, flyers, signs, t-shirts etc. Ensure it will look good across the board.
Keep in mind how a tagline (your slogan) will look next to your logo.
A great logo will look good in black and white as well as color.
Remember—don’t imitate others! Your business is original and so are you. Your logo should represent this.
Finally, use your logo. Pop it on as many things as you can, so everyone can become familiar with your awesome business!
