In Shadow Art: Doll Parts ‘Reveal’ Figures In Suggestive Positions

Virginia-based, Korean artist Bohyun Yoon has put together an intriguing suspended art installation called, ‘Unity’.

The work features fragmented pieces of dolls suspended in mid-air. They are then transformed by light when their shadows are projected onto a wall, into a line of people ‘engaging’ in suggestive poses.

The fragmented pieces are made of silica rubber, and do not really comprise much of the human form when viewed at face-value. They only begin to have meaning when light is cast and their shadows, formed.

To create these intricate shadow forms, Yoon methodically placed spotlights at angles that helped to expose the provocative positions. Yoon described her process, saying that she, cut, extended, distorted, reconstructed, and fragmented “the body to create a chaotic image of a human.”

She also mentioned that her art employs the human body as a device for in-depth investigation of what is public and what is private.
