Instead of throwing out her old copies of The New York Times, New York-based artist Shanti Grumbine started making incredibly intricate and complex hand-cut patterns with them.
Prompted to embark on this project while recovering from Lyme Disease—which made reading difficult for her—she wanted to “make space for what has been censored in media as well as what is lost in the translation of experience into words” by “physically removing content” from the newspapers.
Titled “Kenosis”—which means “emptiness” or “an emptying” in ancient Greek—this series of beautiful newspaper cuttings brings to mind the age-old traditions of paper-cutting in Asia and the Middle East.
Transforming the mundane into fascinating visual art, Grumbine aims to “elicit a sacred experience of the everyday”—you can view more of her wonderful newspaper art on her website.
