The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC engaged collage artist Barbara Kruger to create a text installation that covers the museum’s lobby space.

Kruger is renowned for her aggressive text works, which involve the viewer in questions of power and control, and this piece titled ‘Belief+Doubt’ is no different.

For the installation, Kruger’s bold typography was splayed over every surface including the walls, floor, pillars, and on the side of escalators. The text, in her signature black, red and white, played the role of “immersing visitors in a spectacular hall of voices, where words either crafted by the artist or borrowed from the popular lexicon address conflicting perceptions of democracy, power, and belief”.
