On average, an American produces 4.4 pounds of trash everyday, of which only 35% is recycled. According to Keep America Beautiful, the reason why many people do not recycle is because it is hard to visualize and understand how recycling an item will allow it to come back into the system.

To encourage people to recycle more, Keep America Beautiful and the Ad Council have launched ‘The Recycling Campaign’ that gave garbage a voice.

The campaign “shows consumers that their recyclable materials want to be something more, and promotes recycling as a way to give garbage another life”. This is illustrated by the campaign tagline, ‘I Want To Be Recycled’.

Developed by creative agency Pereira & O’Dell, the campaign features the videos ‘Journey’ and ‘Stadium’, which follows a piece of garbage as it tries to be something more. The video ‘I want to be a bench’ shows how plastic bottles recycled in a community were turned into benches.
