Photos Of New York City Contrasted Against The Emptiness Of The Grand Canyon

When Swiss photographer Gus Petro travelled to the USA at the end of 2012 to “experience something new”, he found something he did not expect: emptiness and density.

Petro decided to document his experience in a three-part photo series ‘Empty, Dense and Merge’.

In ‘Empty’, Petro photographs the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. He found it “dead, quiet and peaceful”, a huge contrast to New York City. “It felt just SO empty and so interesting”, he said. “Looking at some of these images it is easy to loose the scale because there are no real world objects”.

In ‘Dense’, Petro visits New York City, and captures the exact opposite of the emptiness he found in the Grand Canyon.

The last part of his series, ‘Merge’, he contrasts the two very different feelings he experienced. Petro explained, “In this project two opposite places are merged into one: New York City, where, it seems like, everyone wants to live there, and Grand Canyon / Death Valley, which are unlivable.”
