American photographer Sage Sohier has photographed a beautiful and poignant set of portraits that features facial paralysis patients.

Titled ‘About Face’, Sohier spent three years at a facial nerve clinic in Boston, photographing people with varying degrees of facial paralysis.

Each patient has a different story and cause for their partial facial paralysis. Bell’s palsy, tumors, strokes, accidents, and congenital nerve damage are some of them.

This powerful series shows courage of the patients as they overcome their vulnerability of smiling for the camera. They are a testament of the incredible courage required to deal with medical conditions, especially if they affect one’s appearance.
