Tel Aviv-based designer Nir Meiri has created a lamp inspired by the sea.
Called ‘Marine Light’, the lamp shade is made of fresh seaweed that has been dried and shrunk to form its shape.
When switched on, light passes through the seaweed, creating an “algae-like underwater image”.
“Through the unconventional use of seaweed as a main material for a domestic environment, the product plays on the tension between the artistic and the commercial,” wrote Meiri. “Ancient cultures have appreciated and utilized seaweeds for different uses. Today, seaweeds are cultivated and harvested on a commercial scale, as a result of a growing interest driven by environmental concerns.”
