Based in Portland, Oregon, 29-year-old Samantha Hess works as a “Professional Cuddler”.
She charges US$35 a half hour, US$60 an hour if the client wants to spoon, snuggle, or hug. Spending the night with her costs US$300.
Hess was inspired by a man who tried to outdo someone with a “Free Hugs” sign by offering US$2 “Deluxe Hugs”—she noticed that the man who charged for his hugs had more customers, and decided to make a business of it.
She first placed ads online to promote her business, and the publicity even earned her a spot on the state’s “Ed Forman Show”.
The savvy businesswoman also makes her clients sign a waiver stating that these sessions are not to be interpreted as sexual, and that good hygiene must be kept by both parties. Both parties also remain fully clothed throughout the session.
At times, “natural reactions” would occur, but Hess makes it a point not to make it the “focus of her session.”
To ensure her safety, Hess also notifies someone of the appointment and calls that person when it is over with a unique safe word.
Her clients come from all walks of life and have to be over 18 years of age, and she hopes to expand by recruiting six people as well as a lawyer.
