From the vivid imagination of Austin-based artist Rory Skagen comes Mao Mao Ting, “the feline android from off world”, and other bizarre, grotesque monsters.
‘Monster Paintings’ depicts creatures like Maakclops, a one-eyed crustacean-like creature standing in the middle of a road while a building burns in the background. In ‘Hatari Angani’, a pair of fire-breathing winged beasts wreaks destruction on a small town.
Whimsical and bold, Skagen’s distinctive manga-style paintings are influenced by Japanese icons like Godzilla and Ultraman, as well as post-apocalyptic novels and the Cold War.
