London-based French graphic designer Jean Jullien draws a lot while he’s at the beach.

Thus, he created a series of subtly humorous works that showcases the interesting observations he’s made while spending time on the sandy shores by the sea.

“When you think about it, it’s a pretty odd environment in terms of social boundaries,” he tells Cool Hunting. “Yet everyone is as free as a bird.”

First done on paper with brush, then digitally enhanced to give the images vibrant color—his two-dimensional artworks capture people in various amusing scenarios while taking a breather from city life, in a minimalistic cartoonized style to match the essence of the beach.

“I love the beach for how minimal it is; sand, sea, sky and skin. It’s very soft and yet very colorful, so it was important for me to try to explore that graphically,” he added.

“Short, tall, fat skinny bodies, the way light and shadows go against each other with such audacity and the changing of colors as the sun sets—it’s a drawers dream.”
