We have previously seen then-and-now photos of New York City, but those images are nothing like the ones created by photographer and historian Marc A. Hermann.

Instead of juxtaposing plain vintage photos to recreate the ‘then’ portion of the photos, Hermann uses old crime scene photos to reveal the dark past of certain locations.

Taken from the New York Daily News’ archive, the photos not only illustrate “how much has changed and remained the same about the various locations” but also “how crime and the city are covered”.

“Back then, there could have been a shooting on the sixth floor of an apartment building, and the photographers would have a picture looking into the living room as cops stood over the body,” Hermann told Fast Co.Create. “Today, in the same situation, you wouldn’t even be allowed to get on the block. So, it’s not just about a changed scene, it’s about a change industry.”
