Unlike computers, smartphones can’t be ‘upgraded’ after you buy them. You can’t make it run faster, improve its storage space or fix a better camera to take pictures.

The only option is to buy a ‘better’ smartphone—but what happens to your old phone? It usually ends up stored somewhere or worst, thrown away.

To reduce this wastage, Dutch designer Dave Hakkens has developed a concept phone with upgradable and detachable parts.

Called the ‘Phoneblok’, it consists of a base that can be attached with various ‘bloks’ or components—such as mobile antennas, batteries, processors, cameras and displays.

If any of these detachable ‘bloks’ were to break or need to be upgraded, users can simply switch them out.

According to Hakkens, this ‘LEGO-like’ phone will allow users to customize and assemble a phone for their individual needs, as well as reduce wastage from discarding old phones.
