Apple Patents Discreet 911 Fingerprint Dialling For Dangerous Situations

Apple has patented a technology that aims to keep users safe from harm when physically calling and talking to police is too dangerous—for instance, when an attacker is watching them.

The technology will automatically—and most importantly, discreetly—allow the user to enter their own special finger combination to immediately trigger a panic alarm and call the police.

Since this method does not involve talking or conspicuous dialling, it may be much safer than the current emergency dial function. You may even be able to dial for help right under the nose of a dangerous person.

Whether this new technology will appear on the iPhone 8 remains to be seen. Many patents may never be used at all, and this particular patent was applied for in 2013, CNBC reports.

But the lifesaving potential in a tool such as this one—that allows those in danger to secretly, safely get help—makes it a great feature to have on a phone.
