London-based architecture firm McDowell+Benedetti has recently completed the construction of the Scale Lane Bridge in Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire in the north of England.

The unique attribute about this bridge is that it allows pedestrians to swing over the River Hull, as the bridge opens and closes the passage for river traffic.

The experience of riding on the bridge is said to be akin to being onboard a ship, with features such as a viewing deck and seating areas on the central spine of the bridge.

This new ship-like bridge is now a distinct and memorable landmark in Hull, paying homage to its industrial and maritime heritage.

This design was the winning entry in a 2005 international design competition. It is built by the original competition team, architects McDowell+Benedetti, structural engineers Alan Baxter Associates and main contractor and M&E engineers Qualter Hall.
