Living Bamboo Used To ‘Grow’ Structures In China

Young students participating in the three-month-long building project and workshop, ‘City in Sky’, in Wuhan, China, had the opportunity to experiment with using living bamboo as a construction material.

The project, led by architects Mu Wei, Sam Cho and Yu Hui, aimed to “steer the architectural conversation away from concrete and steel, and back towards a more organic approach that dominated Asian architecture for eons.”

The structures in ‘City in Sky’ were partly designed by the children, and consisted of a series of huts on an elevated platform and two open-air structures growing on bamboo plants.

The project also provided the children with a hands-on method of understanding “nature, tools, building and even the real life itself”, something that is lacking in the Chinese education system.
