New York's ‘Little Free Library’ Lets People See From Different Perspectives

As part of the ‘Little Free Library’ project in New York, artist and architectural designer Chat Travieso has designed a book shelter for Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighbourhood.

Titled ‘Word Play’, the project, built in partnership with the Pen World Voices Festival and the Two Bridges Neighbourhood Council, cleverly plays with perspective to create multiple visual effects based on the angle of view.

Based in a diverse community made up of English, Spanish and Chinese speakers, the ‘Word Play’ book shelter displays the word ‘library’ in those three languages, which changes depending on the angle one views it at.

Using a layered plywood design, the book shelter evokes the vertical lines of books on bookshelves. Included seating allows people a place to stay and read, interact with their neighbours or simply enjoy the view.
