The city of Kuala Lumpur has a transportation tunnel with clever capabilities to deal with flash floods that occur every year during the monsoon season.

The tunnel is called the SMART Tunnel (Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel), and it is saving the city millions of dollars in damages when flash floods strike and halt parts of the city each time.

The tunnel has three levels: The lower level is solely for rainwater to drain through while the upper two levels are for road traffic.

In the event of a moderate storm, the middle level will drain out the excess water. If a severe storm comes, then the top level will also contain water to be diverted out.

The construction of this tunnel cost over half a billion dollars and it has daily traffic of approximately 30,000 cars since it was built in 2007. It has helped divert flood waters 44 times since.
