Minnesota-based photographer Jenn Ackerman has created a thought-provoking photo series called ‘Trapped’ that documents the experiences of mentally ill prisoners behind bars.
Due to the lack of funding that supports mental health facilities and institutions, many jails and prisons in the US, which were “designed for security”, have become “traps” for the mentally ill—leaving them with “nowhere else to go”.
Featuring black-and-white photographs of inmates, the photos show the grim reality of how the state is “meeting the needs” of the growing number of patient-prisoners.
