‘Under Black Carpets’ is a ‘Kickstarter’ project with a twist—it is a speculative design proposal to rob five banks that surrounds the ‘One Wilshire’ building in downtown Los Angeles.
London-based designer Ilona Gaynor’s project ‘Under Black Carpets’ will take place in the form of an exhibition at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.
Gaynor spent months planning her perfect heist and conducted research and interviews with the police, FBI, escape artists, criminal attorneys and Hollywood stuntmen.
The exhibition will be presented as a “police investigation, detailing the remaining evidential material after the event has taken place, something that could be argued or challenged as material (evidence) in a court of law. The work itself will take form as sculptures, architectural models, technical drawings, films and photography”.
“The audience’s role is to piece together what they think happened and fill in the void of the things that I’m not telling them”, said Gaynor.
Gaynor stresses that the project is a purely artistic endeavour and that she has no intention of actually robbing any banks.
