The students of ECAL—the University of Art and Design Lausanne—in Switzerland have created an intriguing chair that ‘self-destructs’ after just eight uses.
Called ‘DRM Chair’, the furniture piece is held together by structural joints that are made of wax, which will start to melt once the chair has been sat on for eight times.
A small sensor detects each time someone sits on the chair and activates the count-down—once the limited number of uses run out, the nichrome wire embedded in the wax joints heats up and melts the wax, causing the chair to fall apart.
