For Creatives: Common Portfolio Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

$

A creative’s portfolio plays a large part in determining his or her chance of securing a job. It’s therefore imperative that artists develop as eye-catching and memorable a showcase as possible.

Creative Bloq recently shared eight common portfolio mistakes and provided advice on how to avoid them.

Have a read on what the article offers below and peruse through all the pointers here.

Other articles that might interest you: tips from an ex-Pentagram designer on how to create the “perfect” logo; five mistakes to avoid when designing a logo.

Addressing the wrong audience

It’s good to receive feedback for your portfolio, but keep in mind the main group that this showcase is intended for.

Your friends and family may look out for things that are of little or no concern to potential clients.

Organize and develop your portfolio with your consumers in mind. Try to foresee what they want or need. From there, you’ll have a clearer idea on what to present so as to persuade him or her to hire you.

Over cluttering with all your work

Time is of the essence–you can be sure that potential patrons won’t be spending long periods of time combing through your website.

Keep your portfolio simple to navigate and relevant. Be decisive and showcase only the best of your work that is applicable to your target audience.

Lack of context

For certain projects, it will be helpful to provide more background information on the initiative.

For instance, share on the project brief, challenges, solutions, when the endeavor was taken on, timeline and whether it was a collaborative piece.

Such information gives future clients a strong idea on how you approach and handle your work as well as your experience in the field.

Often criticized for being an unrealistic standard for young impressionable girls, Barbie has earned a reputation as an airhead over the years. Her stereotypical girlie good look has also lost her fans among more progressive young women.

However, as an effort to stay relevant in the 21st century, the Barbie brand has staged a comeback, embracing empowerment and diversity as part of its ethos.

Paying homage to Barbie’s original purpose—giving girls a creative outlet for exploring aspirations—the brand launched the ‘You Can Be Anything’ campaign last year, encouraging girls to pursue their dream careers.

This adorable spot features the children acting as professionals for a day, be it lecturing a hall of university students, or coaching a team of soccer players.

The brand has since intensified its focus on diversity with the addition of multicultural Barbies, and redesigning the doll to reflect realistic body types.

With such efforts, sales is definitely picking up again, according to Juliana Chugg, chief brand officer of Barbie.

Interestingly, the brand is now looking into reducing gender stereotypes, with plans to create Barbies for boys in the future.

Lizzie Campbell of Clay Disarray works on her projects using mostly polymer clay and mixed materials.

For Halloween, she’s expanded her ‘Polymer Posters’ project by creating clay versions of iconic horror movies. Now, films like An American Werewolf in London, It, and The Exorcist have their polymer counterparts.

Many of Campbell’s works are inspired by her love for films, and this alternative collection of movie posters is evident of that. She writes, “I enjoy working on horror posters a little more as it reminds me of trying to sneak a peek at horror movies as a child. Too young to watch the films, I was left wondering what the scary characters might look like.”
